"Cyprus will roll out a €174 million aid package between 2027 and 2032 to cushion vulnerable households against expected fuel price increases linked to upcoming EU climate directives. Combining €131 million in European funding with €43 million from the national budget, the grant schemes are scheduled to launch early in 2027—a year ahead of the new European framework's 2028 enforcement date. Vulnerable households in Cyprus are slated to receive €174 million in financial support from 2027 to 2032. This initiative comes as the government prepares for new European energy regulations, which are projected to raise fuel costs.
The comprehensive support package totals €174 million, consisting of €131 million in European funding and €43 million from national resources. It aims to assist Cypriot citizens facing energy and transport poverty in adapting to the impending changes.
Last week, a Ministry of Finance representative informed Cyprus’ House Energy Committee that European Union member states have the flexibility to launch their support programs a year ahead of the new system's implementation. Consequently, grant schemes in Cyprus are anticipated to commence in 2027, preceding the new European framework's scheduled effective date in 2028.
This early rollout of financial aid is designed to ease the transition for vulnerable populations, especially households grappling with escalating energy and transportation expenses. These measures are intrinsically linked to ongoing parliamentary deliberations concerning legislation that will align Cyprus with European directives promoting renewable energy in the transport sector and sustainable aviation fuels.
